Cook What You Have

Recipe Reception finds recipes you can actually make — filtered by the ingredients already in your kitchen, the equipment you own, and a cap on how many things you’d have to buy. Add a few to a cart and get one merged shopping list, aggregated across recipes and checked against your pantry.

How It Works

• Ingredient engine — turns messy recipe text into structured data, so “2 cloves garlic” and “1 tbsp minced garlic” from two different recipes merge into one shopping-list line instead of two
• Pantry-aware — ticks off what you already have; partial quantities subtract correctly instead of just canceling the line
• Import from the web — pull in a recipe from a real site via JSON-LD, not just the bundled library
• Works offline — including mid-shopping-trip, with no signal in the store
• One codebase, every platform — Android, iOS, iPadOS, and web from a single Expo app

Status

The ingredient engine, schema, and app core are fully built and tested (258 tests across the stack), and the app itself already bundles for iOS, Android, and web with working find/cart/list/recipe screens. What’s not yet true: nobody has used it for a real shopping trip. The next milestone persists checkoffs to the database, freezes a shopping list so it stops rearranging itself while you’re in a store, and grows ingredient-catalog coverage against real imported recipes.
